So the National Novel Writing Month is going better for you than for me, I hope. I’m still at word 1. On the good side, I’m not writing because I’m busy working, which here in Michigan is nothing to complain about.
The question you have before you is what to do after Thanksgiving when you polish off the last page of that story, when the damsel gets saved, the anti-hero finds a deeply rooted integrity, and the aliens start some form of dance or parade to celebrate the victory of the coming-of-age hero over the villain-with-just-one-exploitable-vulnerability.
Now what?
Creative Byline, that’s what.
By way of full disclosure, I must admit that I’m not completely uninvolved with this company. I’ve done a bit of software support for them and happily call them “customer”. But that aside, this is a really good model for releasing your manuscript into the wide world.
They begin by having a first reviewer read a few chapters of your manuscript, and the response from that reviewer will help you get it ready for the eyes of the publisher. Then they’ll help you find the appropriate publishers who are interested in the genre of story you have written.
Deep breaths, now. This is where the dream takes a few faltering steps on its own legs to see if it will stand. This is the point where the goal of getting published, facing the reality of publishing, can turn from “wouldn't it be cool if” to “wouldn't that have been great”.
That’s frightening.
But it could also lead to “it is better than I ever hoped”. Remember that without moving forward with your manuscript, it will always sit in the back of your wishing moments as something you wanted to have done something with.
It can’t hurt, can it? What’s the worst that will happen? You’ll get rejected? How does that make you worse off than never submitting in the first place?
