I just now stumbled over one of those aspects of parenting that I had thought was laid to rest decades ago when I asked my father to turn off the Pat Boone for goodness sakes because we are civilized people. Right now, my wife and daughter are at dance class and my son is playing I-Spy Bingo on the floor of my office as I work.
“Hey,” I said innocently. “Let’s listen to music from when Dad was a boy.”
“Ok,” he said, not even looking up.
I found a station called “A Flock Of Eighties” on Accuradio.com and quickly skipped the first offering of Madonna. The follow-up is Atomic Dog. You know… Bow wow wow yippee yo yippe yay. From 1982. By George Clinton. Composed by Eric Clapton. Yes, that Eric Clapton. Snoop Dogg sampled this one back in the 90’s, foshizzle.
The boy has not commented yet. If the Cars are coming up next, I have half a chance at redemption, but pretty much, from this abysmal hole of 80’s mania, the only thing that can draw us back out to the light would be Tarzan Boy.
Then I’m gonna push the volume all the way to 11 and celebrate the awesomeness.
Rest assured that I have convinced myself this morning that I may never ever, under any circumstances, tell Teenage-Him that his music is horrible compared to the glory days of Teenage-Me. He’ll just laugh and throw down an mp3 of Alphaville. Stinkin’ catchy German Technopop ruined my parental credibility for decades.
